Landmarks Across New York State to Be Illuminated on October 21
ALBANY – The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) today announced that landmarks across New York State will be illuminated in navy and green on the evening of October 21 to recognize New York’s College Application Initiative (CAI) and encourage students across the state to take the next step toward higher education by applying to college for free. Landmarks capable of displaying only a single color will shine in green.
This year, more than 130 colleges and universities across New York State are waiving application fees during designated periods during October and November, giving students the opportunity to apply to college without the cost of an application fee. More than 700 high schools across the state are also participating in the expanded College Application Initiative, providing students with support and resources to explore their college options, receive application assistance and take the next step toward higher education. Here is the complete list of participating institutions.
Last year, New York’s statewide effort resulted in more than 300,000 college application fees being waived, saving students and families approximately $15 million.
“When New York’s landmarks light up in navy and green, they will send a message to students across our state: your future is bright, and opportunity is within reach,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “We want every student to see college as a real possibility and to have the resources and support to take that next step. By expanding our College Application Initiative, we’re giving more young New Yorkers the chance to explore their options, pursue their ambitions and build a brighter future right here in New York.”
The College Application Initiative is a statewide effort to increase college access and encourage first-generation students and students from underserved populations to take the important step of applying to college. Led by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), in partnership with the NYSED, SUNY, CUNY, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Private College and other education partners, CAI brings together high schools, colleges, universities and community partners to provide students and families with application assistance, college planning resources and guidance throughout the process.
This year, College Application Month was expanded to College Application Initiative marking a monumental step forward in New York’s commitment to helping students reach new heights. By extending the initiative across October and November, students will have more time, support and opportunity to explore their college options, complete applications and pursue the futures they envision.
