Commerce awards funding to support regional workforce strategies; next application window to open August 25

The North Dakota Department of Commerce has awarded funding to three projects through the Regional Workforce Impact Program (RWIP), supporting locally driven strategies to strengthen workforce conditions and long‑term regional sustainability.

“RWIP continues to help industries and communities design approaches that meet the unique workforce needs of their region,” said Commerce Deputy Commissioner and Workforce Director Katie Ralston Howe. “These projects demonstrate thoughtful, targeted solutions that help North Dakota remain competitive and resilient.”

Projects receiving funding include:

  • Tri‑County Regional Development Council — Awarded $130,100 This project will develop a dual‑sector workforce strategy focused on the energy/utility and healthcare industries. The initiative brings together employers, local governments, education and training providers, workforce partners, and community organizations to collaboratively address sector needs.
  • Central Regional Education Association — Awarded $79,300 This project aims to strengthen workplace conditions, improve leadership responsiveness, and support locally designed approaches rather than one‑size‑fits‑all solutions. It directly measures educator workplace experience and embeds those recommendations to improve workforce stability and educator retention across participating districts.
  • City of Beach — Awarded $60,000 This project will establish a coordinated, sector‑ based approach to workforce planning and long‑term sustainability among regional healthcare providers. Efforts will focus on bringing together healthcare partners in the area, including primary industry partners such as CHI St. Alexius Health – Beulah, to collaboratively address shared workforce challenges.

RWIP application window reopens August 25.

The next opportunity to apply for RWIP funding will open at 9 a.m. CDT on August 25.
