Woman Critically Injured in Shark Attack at Sydney Beach

(MENAFN) A woman remains in critical condition after being attacked by a shark on Saturday at a well-frequented beach in Sydney’s eastern coastal region of Australia. The incident led local officials to shut down surrounding beaches as a safety measure, according to media accounts.

Emergency responders were dispatched to Coogee Beach just before 11:15 a.m. local time after bystanders assisted the woman, believed to be in her 30s, out of the ocean, a news agency reported.

The injured woman sustained severe wounds to her arm and leg. Paramedics provided immediate medical care at the location before arranging for her airlift transfer to a medical facility.

A surf lifesaving vessel operator and a paddleboard participant played a key role in helping transport the wounded swimmer back to shore.

Multiple visitors at the beach reported spotting a shark nearby shortly before the incident occurred. In response, authorities swiftly evacuated swimmers from the water and closed Coogee Beach, along with several other beaches managed by the Randwick Council, as a precautionary step.

Officials have launched an inquiry into the attack, and the beach closures are anticipated to stay in effect until safety assessments confirm that the area can be reopened to the public.
