Rubio Says Progress Made in Iran Talks, Agreement Still Unresolved
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that negotiations with Iran have made “some progress,” while stressing that the situation remains unresolved and could still shift in the coming days.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi after discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rubio said there may be further updates soon, though he cautioned that no final outcome has been reached.
“There might be some news (on Iran) later today. There may not be. I hope there will be. I am not sure yet. There has been some progress done,” he said.
He added that developments could emerge “later today, tomorrow, maybe a couple of days,” but emphasized that the core issues must be resolved decisively.
Rubio reiterated Washington’s position that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons and said key concerns include uranium enrichment and the handling of highly enriched material.
He also linked the broader negotiations to wider regional issues, including maintaining open maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions.
“The strait needs to be open without tolls,” he said, adding that the goal is to address nuclear and enrichment concerns through ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The US and Iran are reportedly continuing indirect negotiations, with proposals and counterproposals being exchanged via intermediaries, including discussions tied to maritime access and nuclear restrictions.
