Syrian President Arrives in Cyprus for Emergency EU Summit

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has arrived in the Greek Cypriot-controlled part of Lefkosa to take part in an emergency European Union summit, according to reports on Friday.

As stated by reports, al-Sharaa traveled to participate in the high-level gathering, which is being held under the title “Saving the Summer” and focuses on mounting concerns over an energy crisis affecting Europe and nearby regions.

The summit, hosted in Lefkosa, has been convened to address the fallout from major disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil shipments. Officials say the situation has raised fears over energy shortages and price instability heading into the summer period.

The meeting brings together senior EU figures, including European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Nikos Christodoulides, leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration.

In addition to European representatives, the event includes an expanded working lunch involving regional leaders from the Middle East. Attendees reportedly include Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, and Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim al-Budaiwi, alongside al-Sharaa.

According to reports, discussions are expected to center on coordinated European responses to stabilizing energy supplies, reducing price pressures, and diversifying sources of imports. Leaders are also expected to examine broader regional implications, including economic risks and collective security concerns linked to the unfolding crisis.
