Macron Pushes Iran to De-escalate Regional Tensions

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron called Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, pushing Tehran to de-escalate regional tensions and safeguard free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.

Speaking via posts on X, the US-owned social media platform, Macron disclosed the contents of the call and outlined Paris's position on the ongoing crisis.

"I urged him to seize the opportunity presented by the discussions launched in Islamabad to pave the way for a sustainable reduction in tensions, as well as for reaching a precise and binding agreement," Macron said.

The French president stressed that any such agreement must bring together all relevant parties and deliver concrete security guarantees across the region. He also renewed calls for strict adherence to an existing ceasefire arrangement.

"I also stressed the importance of fully respecting the ceasefire, including in Lebanon," Macron said.

Paris reaffirmed its backing of Beirut's governing institutions as the only legitimate authority empowered to exercise sovereignty and chart the nation's course. Macron further indicated that France stood prepared to play an active role in restoring safe and unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The diplomatic exchange comes as Pakistan hosts what analysts describe as the most consequential US-Iran negotiations since 1979 — landmark talks aimed at ending a wider regional conflict during a fragile two-week ceasefire brokered earlier this week in Islamabad.

The war, triggered by a US-Israeli offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, has exacted a severe human toll. Iranian health authorities report nearly 3,000 nationals killed in the fighting. On the American side, at least 13 servicemen lost their lives, with dozens more sustaining wounds.
