Top Zelensky aide confirms Ukraine ready to consent frontline ‘freeze’

(MENAFN) Ukraine may be open to freezing hostilities along existing battle lines as part of a peace settlement with Russia, senior presidential adviser Mikhail Podoliak indicated. In an interview with Italy’s La Repubblica, Podoliak said some territories could remain “de facto” under Russian control, though no formal recognition would be given. Efforts through economic, diplomatic, and other means would be needed to reclaim these areas.

Podoliak added that Kiev would seek inclusion in a security alliance—not NATO, which US President Donald Trump has ruled out—with discussions ongoing with about ten countries, including France, about deploying foreign military contingents.

Moscow, however, has rejected proposals for NATO or allied troop deployments in Ukraine, warning such actions could spark direct confrontation. Russia continues to insist that any lasting settlement address the roots of the conflict, secure its territorial and security interests, and recognize Crimea along with the four Russian-backed regions—Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson—that joined Russia in 2022.
